Here’s how we made the exquisite beast corpse! Check the captions for commentary.
There are only a few hours left to preorder the Exquisite Beast book!! Please take a gander! We all worked really hard to make these look as good as possible!
Exquisite corpses are super fun to do! I think Evan and I made a pretty solid critter, ha ha.
OH GOSH, only 4 hours left in the Kickstarter!!!! Thank you again to everyone who has supported this project!

2 Kawaii 4 U process gif. (final illustration, as print, as tee)
Still in Japan for a few more days, but I put this together right before I left so I’m gonna post it now for you guys! Here’s the Kawaii design, from initial concept to sketch, color mockup, and finished design. I’m really glad it resonated with people! The number of people who stated a desire to get it as a tattoo was astounding (which I’m cool with by the way, please send me photos if you get it done!) Anyway, thanks guys!

Three of Swords process gif. (final illustration.)
Here’s a process gif of the Dhio tarot card from yesterday! I’ve been really trying to/meaning to delve into better design in my illustrations. If you are also interested in those things, Kali Ciesemier (kalidraws) has some great articles on her blog about composition and subdivision!

Reason and Desire process. (final)
As promised, here’s the process gif of yesterday’s illustration. The colors were originally more muted with soft greens instead of the yellow, but then I decided to shoot for a high-saturation primary palette.
There’s more of my process posts over here if you’re interested!

Hey guys! The Benign Kingdom Spring 2013 kickstarter only has a few hours left! If it reaches $50K, Evan, Becky, KC, and myself will do a fresh new jam poster that will be sent to everyone who receives a physical shipment! Also this group of artists is so rad, you guys. I’ve seen these books and they are gorgeous.

Lion Queen process.
Put together a process gif of the thing I posted yesterday. The initial sketch was 2.5”x3” because everything I draw is teeny always.

Kaia and Dhio painting, animated process gif.
I made a little process gif of how I made the previous painting. Ha ha, I have this bad habit of digitally noodling with real media stuff until it looks digital. Gotta looooosen uuuup
I should probably mention, the actual painting is super tiny, maybe 4”x4”.

Kaia and Dhio Progress Post. Non-photo blue pencil, brush and ink, photoshop touchups.
A picture of Kaia and Dhio for a ~mysterious thing.~ I tried to give informational captions on each image. If you’re trying to get your hands on these types of tools, I order my brushes and ink from ASW Express and brush pens and non-photo blue pencil lead from Jet Pens or the Kinokuniya in Manhattan. I learned everything I know about brush inking from the Comic Tools blog.

Jaime painting process/preproduction/detail mashup. (click the first thumbnail to see the .gif animated)
This is the first painting I’ve ever done where I’ve set up a pre-set palette and extensive color studies and stuff. Which I all proceeded to ignore, haha. In the end, I guess the most comfortable way for me to paint is by the seat of my pants, and then followed up with a bunch of color overlays and textures to strong-arm in a sense of unity. :|
I tried to recreate what I did in this picture (which was pretty much a happy accident), and do something loose and lineless, with heavy contrast and heavy texture, done almost exclusively one brush (it’s one of the photoshop dry media brush presets, labeled “Soft Oil Pastel”). These are all things that usually make me uncomfortable and it was fun to push myself.
Added some detail shots in there too, because I was sad the lions in his crossguard and armor didn’t show up so well. (edit: tumblr killed the resolution in the slideshow, so here’s a hosted copy of the file)
If you guys have any questions, leave ‘em in the disqus comments, I do my best to reply when I can!
