Old Ace Attorney tegaki fanart, 2008.

My wrist is still recovering and I’ve been spending a lot of my time daydreaming about having the time/health to be able to play the new Ace Attorney game.  In a fit of nostalgia, I dug out my old tegaki doodles from 2008.  Due to the nature of Tegaki, a buncha these are piecemeal uncompleted conversations with other people and might be a little incoherent.

I hope you guys get a kick outta ‘em!

Nostalgia Monday: Manga Math Mysteries #3: The Mystery of the Secret Ghost.  2009 (published 2010).
I haven’t posted anything old in a while, so here’s something!  Manga Math #3 was the very first thing I did right out of college and it was my very first professional cartooning job.  I’ll always be thankful to Carol, my wonderful editor, for reaching out and giving me that first opportunity.
It’s weird that it’s only been four five years since graduation, it feels like ten!

Nostalgia Monday: Krehs Dragons, 1997.  (age 11)

Last night I stumbled upon a giant cache of my old artwork in a series of hidden folders.  These guys were pretty much my earliest characters; I’d just seen Star Wars in its entirety for the first time and thought the aliens were pretty much the coolest things.  Already bein’ way into dragons, I designed these mammilian pseudo-dragons and proceeded to become obsessed with them until that obsession was replaced by Pokémon in 1998/99.

I recall drawing a chunk of these on a Saturday while watching Hercules and Xena in the basement.

100 Dragons and a Knight, 1999?  Nostalgia Monday.
I found this monstrous thing underneath my old bed at my parents’ house!  The paper was easily two or three feet wide, so it had to be photographed.  I’m still very fond of the sirrush in the upper left corner.
Guys.  Guys, I really liked dragons as a kid.  I still do but far less consumingly so

The Ballad of Trash Guitar.  2006.  Nostalgia Monday.
A little journal comic from college!  This was one of the first times I’d willingly used heavy spot-blacks and I was inordinately proud of myself.  Definitely a proto-Johnny Wander comic.
Now that I think of it, I don’t remember what happened to that little guitar!  I think it got left at a friend’s apartment.

Judith Beheading Holofernes, 2009.  Nostalgia Monday.
A stupid paint-over I did in 2009 of Artemesia Gentileschi's rendition of Judith and Holofernes with o3o faces.  I think it was a thing that Anthony started.  I’ll never understand how Poupon is able to make all those crazy classical paint-overs and make them look so natural and integrated.

Snap Dragon, 1999.  graphite and watercolor pencils.  Nostalgia Monday.
Haven’t done a Nostalgia Monday in a bit!  This one’s from 1999, I was 13 or 14— a dragon based on a snap dragon flower.  This drawing would be really fun to revisit, maybe I will when things aren’t so hectic!
Speaking of hectic!  I’m going to be in Japan from the 15th to the 25th, so there won’t be much in the way of updates while I’m gone.  (and will be attending MoCCA and TCAF immediately after returning, but that’s a different story)  I’ll try to put some stuff in the queue, and hopefully there will be enough Exquisite Beasts to fill the interim.

Archaeopteryx, 1998.  Nostalgia Monday.
I was looking through my old art folders to find something that might show some sort of arc of improvement since the last post.  But then I found this archaeopteryx that I drew with a mouse when I was 12.

Bird Dragon. 1999.  Nostalgia Monday.
I remember drawing this in a hotel room while staying in Atlantic City with my mom for a teaching conference.  It’s admittedly pretty neat to see what difference a year makes!
Well, uh, yeah, and then there’s the coloring.  Listen, I was taking a class at the local community college to learn how to use Photoshop 5 and I thought that “render clouds” was the coolest thing.  You gotta cut me some slack, I was 13 or 14.

A Totally Sweet Fan Pokémon.  1999.  Nostalgia Monday.
Wow, you guys were really on about seeing my old pokémon fanart!
This was probably my first digitally colored picture, done in some terrible photo-retouching program that doesn’t exist anymore and probably came free with our scanner.  Pokémon Red and Blue had just been released in the states and there was a contest being put on by a fansite to design a fourth legendary bird.  I either placed first or second and won like four packs of Pokémon cards and that was just about the coolest thing that’d ever happened to me.  At the very least, it was the first time I’d seen any sort of payoff for my art.
Actually now that I think about it, this was a really important picture.

Hidden Dragon.  1998.  Nostalgia Monday.
Sorry, I forgot about Nostalgia Monday for a few weeks there.  Here’s the followup from a month after this picture.  This was the first piece of art I ever put on the internet.
I still couldn’t entirely grasp the anatomy (wow, check out all those joints), but it’s kinda crazy seeing the jump in understanding between the last picture and this one.  Good job, 12-year-old me.
Over the holiday I stumbled across my old 486 backup!  I’d forgotten how much pokémon fanart I drew in my early teens. 8|

Dragon Battle.  1998.  Nostalgia Monday.
So remember that part where I mentioned studying the anatomy of wings?  Apparently all that was forgotten pretty quickly.  To my 12-year-old credit, I don’t think I actually understood the underlying skeletal anatomy and was trying to emulate the profile of a wing-shape.  No comment on those bizarre legs.
Anyway, dragons are the coolest.

Copy of an Audubon Painting.  1997.  Nostalgia Monday.
Aw yiss, more stuff found in my parents’ basement!
When I was 12, my mom gave me a miniature book of Audubon bird paintings.  Somehow it became my most important resource book for a couple years— I learned a lot about anatomy and wing structure from leafing through the thing for hours and trying to copy the paintings in watercolor.  This one was a sharp-shinned hawk.  There were a bunch more, but this guy was my favorite.

The Best Thing I Have Or Will Ever Draw.  1992-ish?  Nostalgia Monday.
Suppose this should be prefaced by the fact that my dad, being a Japanese businessman, has always been a smoker.  And I guess I had some pretty strong feelings about that as a kid?
I can’t really explain what’s going on with the crazy freestyle spelling or why I didn’t go with a standard "Stop Smoking" instead of "You Got To Get Out of Smo(c)king."  I do vividly remember drawing this, then afterwards taking a step back and thinking, “wow, everything here is spelled pretty badly, I should probably know better. OH WELL”
By the way, you should check out the Nostalgia Monday tag if you have a sec.  There’s some really cool stuff going on in there; childhood drawings and comic pages, redrawn art lineups, really neat stuff.  I’m in love with Jisuk’s bus drawing, that might be my favorite thing unearthed so far.

Eouen, 2002.  Nostalgia Monday, this is nearly ten years old oh jeez I was 16 aaa
I’ve been looking for this picture for a couple weeks now, figured I’d lost it!  Turns out it was on an older hard drive.
Since I’ve been drawing my old pantheon, might as well show off how I used to draw my old pantheon.  Eouen is the cardinal god of the East and technically Dhio and Kaia’s boss.  I was still subscribing to the school of “let’s put some funky elaborate shit on a character that’s pretty memorable right?”  I might just have played Final Fantasy 10.
Someone requested a redesign of Eouen in the comments recently, I’m definitely gonna do it.  I like her too much to leave her with that costume. :/ :\ :/ :\
why am I putting this back on the internet, the internet doesn’t need to remember this
