Penny and Walter’s Uncomfortable Dinner. brush and ink.

If you were not aware, Ananth and I are currently posting pages from Lucky Penny over at Johnny Wander! This is a panel from page 60-something, but I was pleased with the inks and am sharing it with you now.

This was the second time I’d ever used SketchUp to do a panel layout. Just a buncha squares to show where furniture sat — but it was a fairly painless process, all things considered. And it saved me an incredible amount of time!

Adventure Time Cover!  Photoshop.

Oh mans you guys, the next round of Adventure Time covers were announced!  And I did one!  Marceline and the Scream Queens by Meredith Gran is coming out next month and I couldn’t be more excited! (though my cover won’t be coming out ‘til September)

I recently bought a giant book of gig posters and wanted to do something in that heavily designed, kind of dirty screen-printed style.  It was such a blast putting this together!

The poster to the left is the final version, and the one on the right is a more sinister alt.

Scott Pilgrim Color Test

Back in 2009, I was approached as a potential colorist for the Scott Pilgrim Color Editions. I was given permission to share these pages, so I am!  In the end, I’m really thankful that I wasn’t given the gig — I’m not a super great or confident colorist and the job would’ve been done at the exclusion of all other personal work.

The Scott Pilgrim color books are looking rad!  Look for them in August!

Brush practice.  Brush and ink.
I honestly hadn’t touched a inking brush in several months until yesterday.  It’s nice to be back, I think the time away made me rethink the way I was working.  These guys are characters from A Thing I’ve been working on for a while.
Also at the bottom is Ombre de Loup from Freaks’ Squeele, which is among my very very favorite comics despite my inability to understand French in any capacity.  I want so badly for this comic to be picked up and translated, I think it’d do well with an English-speaking audience.  If you are fluent in French or want a gorgeous/sexy/fun/tongue-in-cheek bit of eye-candy, seriously consider picking up the series.

answerin’ a question about comic sizes

William Tongue askedDear Yuko, what size do you draw the Johnny Wander originals at? How big are the letters at that size? Thank you for being so awesome and inspiring.

Aw shucks, thank you!  Short story comics (Girl with the Skeleton Hand, at left) are done at 9”x12” on smooth bristol.  Journal comics (at right) are done at 7”x10” in a sketchbook.  I’ve been told that I work unusually small — most cartoonists tend to work much larger than I do. (except for Dustin Harbin, who has the tiniest originals I’ve ever seen — like 4”x4”!)

Honestly, I have no idea how to measure my lettering!  I just do whatever fits in or looks right and my text sizes vary pretty drastically from comic to comic.  Some people assume that I have a font made from my handwriting (which is very flattering!) but no, I do all my lettering by hand.

Oh man oh man!  Guy Davis drew our character, and she’s on the cover of the book!  Right behind Conan the Barbarian!  Isn’t that great?  That’s so great.
ananthymous:

Callie Eats Feathers was an 8-page short we did for Dark Horse back in February - it arrives in DHP Volume 5 this August (listing on the DH website here). Callie is on the cover, front and center, as drawn by Guy Davis. Yuko and I both geeked out a bit.
