Benign Kingdom presents their first collection of themed titles - Capture Creatures, the Exquisite Beast, and Midnite Surprise.
Capture Creatures - by Becky Dreistadt and Frank Gibson
Inspired by Ken Sugimori’s feat of designing the original 151 Pokemon in a single year Becky Dreistadt and Frank Gibson have created 151 unique creatures, relations, and descriptors. The Exquisite Beast - by Evan Dahm and Yuko Ota
A series of illustrations of a monster evolving traded between Yuko and Evan. All illustrations were done with ink and inkwash.Midnite Surprise V2 - by KC Green
A collection of material from KC Green’s art blog - midnitesurprise.tumblr.com this collection features a new collection of work featuring original illustrations, comics, and more.
If you were not previously aware, these fine books are now available for preorder! Including-but-not-limited-to my and Evan’s collected Exquisite Beast project!
We worked really hard on designing these books and the Exquisite Beast book is hopefully gonna be really lovely, especially the deluxe edition. We’re shooting for the deluxe cover to be a three-piece done with black faux leather binding over a cloth cover with a screenprinted design, debossed title area, a pasted-on title card. With a ribbon bookmark. I’m ridiculously excited. 8D
And it’s gonna be full of weird monsters and that is cool, too!

Benign Kingdom 2013 Dog Process. (final full logo)
Hey guys! The Benign Kingdom Spring 2013 kickstarter only has a few hours left! If it reaches $50K, Evan, Becky, KC, and myself will do a fresh new jam poster that will be sent to everyone who receives a physical shipment! Also this group of artists is so rad, you guys. I’ve seen these books and they are gorgeous.

We’re going to be at NYCC this weekend!
Ananth and I are going to be sharing the Benign Kingdom booth with a the rest of the B9 family. I’m going to have signing times this time around and will not be available for the entirety of the show. (which basically means there’s a mandatory hour long break in the middle of each day to force me to eat, which I don’t normally do during conventions)
Just enter the hall and go to the right and back until you hit a dark corner with a bunch of pipes! That is us. We’re across the way from Mondo!

Benign King Portrait - Andrew. Ink wash, acrylic wash, watercolor, photoshop noodling
The Benign Kingdom Spring 2012 Ruler was Andrew Duff! He’s a lovely guy and I’ve worked with him in the past — he’s one of the masterminds behind Printsess.com, HeyChickadee.com, and Pusheen the cat. Instead of doing a portrait of just him, I decided to do him, Claire, Stormy, Carmen, and Pusheen together as the Benign Royal Family. You’re the best, Andrew!
The Benign Kingdom Fall 2012 kickstarter is now over! Thank you to everyone who backed and promoted it!

Benign Kingdom Dog Painting, Shiba Inu. Ink wash, some photoshop colors.
The last dog portrait from the 2012 Spring Benign Kingdom kickstarter! This contributor requested a shiba inu, which are also coincidentally my favorite dogs. Here’re the first and second dog portraits if you missed them.
The Fall 2012 Benign Kingdom kickstarter is still going for another day! Give it a look-see, this collection is highlighting Emmy, Anthony, Aaron, and Danielle! They will also paint some dogs for you!

Benign Kingdom Dog Painting, Red Panda. Ink wash, some photoshop colors
The second of the Kickstarter Benign Kingdom paintings! Instead of a dog, we were requested to do a red panda, which was great because red pandas are great. Here’s my first painting if you missed it!
The Fall 2012 Benign Kingdom Kickstarter is still goin’! Check it out if you haven’t yet, you should seriously watch the video if anything. To be honest, I’m pretty surprised no one has pledged for the dog paintings yet!

Benign Kingdom Dog Painting, Farrie. Ink wash, some photoshop colors
I’m pretty sure all the backers of the Spring B9 Kingdom got their paintings, so I’m going to start posting them over here! One of the top tier rewards was “every artist does a painting of the same dog,” and this backer requested portraits of their keeshond, Farrie. I put a little color on her for the heck of it.
AND HEY, did you know there’s a NEW Benign Kingdom kickstarter now? The Fall 2012 collection is up, highlighting the works of Emmy, Anthony, Aaron, and Danielle! You can get each of them to do a painting of the same dog if you felt so inclined!

Kaia. Photoshop.
This was a spot illustration I did just for the Benign Kingdom book, which you can pick up in our TopatoCo shop. By the way! Did you know that Johnny Wander moved to TopatoCo? Let-me-tell-you, it is so nice having competent people taking care of our distribution. (Because Ananth and I were taking care of it ourselves before)

Cecilia and Death portraits. Digitally colored ink and marker drawings.
I actually did these drawings back in 2010 as sketchbook drawings, but Ananth and I liked them so much that they got colored for the Benign Kingdom book.
Gosh, so many people have been asking for the continuation of Girl with the Skeleton Hand, and I want so badly to get on their next story! Ananth already has it written and everything! But there’s so much on my plate as it is and I am such a painfully slow artist. :| (But there will be more, I promise!)

Ananth and I are gonna be at MoCCA Comic Festival tomorrow! We’re going to be tabling with my friend (and yours), Aaron Diaz of Dresden Codak (who if you do not already follow on Tumblr, you probably should.)
We’re going to have Benign Kingdom books with us! This is gonna be the first time you can pick ‘em up from us, it’s gonna be rad! Hopefully we’ll be seeing you!

This is Benign Kingdom Spring 2012.
Art books by Yuko, Becky, KC, and myself. They look great and I guarantee you this is the start of something big…
Oh man oh man, the Benign Kingdom books have come in! That hardcover looks incredible. If you didn’t see on Twitter, the bookplates also are lookin’ pretty cool.

Serona at Sunset, reworked. For the Benign Kingdom art book.
I am going to be honest: I have never liked the original version of this. It was the result of some mindless noodling at a convention and I’m pretty sure the only reason I colored it in the first place was to have something to put on this blog.
This picture was on the short list to be in the Benign Kingdom artbook, and I conceded with the stipulation that I’d get the chance to rework it. And then I diiiiiiid. I didn’t have time to fix everything — to do that, I would’ve had to completely redraw it — but I’m much happier with the result.
