I drew this over the weekend as an experiment to see how quickly I could draw and ink something digitally. The pencils and inks for this were done in maybe 2 hours, which is amazingly fast for me since I tend to agonize over stuff!
Some UNNAMED PALS have been buggin’ me to draw Dhio not being decapitated or mutilated or in otherwise unhappy situations. The colors and texture were partially based off The Unicorn in Captivity, which my buddy Chelsea and I saw this past week.
Forged Iron process gif(6 color print). For the Arcana show at Telegraph Art Gallery. (final illustration)
The Arcana show at Telegraph Gallery is opening tonight! If you’re in the Charlottesville, VA area, you can buy this illustration as a 18x24” screened print! They’ll also be available at the Telegraph/SEIBEI table at NYCC! I will also be present there!!
Aaaa, I saw photos of final prints the other day and they look SO SO RAD!
Forged Iron. For the Arcana show at Telegraph Art Gallery.
I’m going to have a piece in Telegraph’s next art show! The Arcana show is all interpretations of major arcana tarot cards, and like a nerd I jumped for the Strength card and filled it with all of my favorite kinds of imagery. And also Dhio and Kaia.
Arcana will be running from October 4th-30th at Telegraph in Charlottesville, VA! You’ll be able to buy an 18x24” screened print of this at the show/Telegraph site/NYCC! I’ll also have a few prints at next year’s conventions! More about the show opening here.
I saw some other people drawin’ their characters as Animal Crossing animals and thought it was a fun idea! Walter and North both get to be “Smug”-type, because that’s the closest equivalent to “anxious,” ha ha.
And the girl took the long, sharp hairpin that the man had given her And she cut the great black dog’s throat, from sternum to jaw And at the first prick of the hairpin, the dog went stiff and silent And fell, still as death And from the hole in the dog’s throat emerged the man His hair and skin and eyes still as black as the dog’s And his throat cut as the dog’s was From sternum to jaw
Hmm, I sure have been drawing an awful lot of decapitated and otherwisemutilated monsters lately, hmm. I’m sure there’s a perfectly reasonable subconscious reason for this that isn’t weird and disturbing.
The young god, the old god, and the mortal monster man who the two gods liked enough to make immortal so they could be together forever. Ha ha ha, so many people have asked me lately when I’m gonna do a comic about these guys. The answer is: ????? the future ????? I’m really thankful they resonate with people, though!
Hey so I’m going to be out of the country from the 12th to the 24th of April, so this blog is going to be fairly quiet until then. Ananth will continue updating over at Johnny Wander in my absence and I’ll hopefully be able to update dumb photos over at my twitter whenever there’s free wifi access. Take care, guys!
Here’s a process gif of the Dhio tarot card from yesterday! I’ve been really trying to/meaning to delve into better design in my illustrations. If you are also interested in those things, Kali Ciesemier (kalidraws) has some great articles on her blog about composition and subdivision!
Drew this on the plane headed to ECCC. I guess it’s a spiritual successor to the Dhio Journal Comic from a while back? Been thinkin’ a lot about my pantheon of prehistoric beast gods lately! Some day I won’t be working on four big projects simultaneously and will have the time to do a proper comic about these guysss
There’s a open ballot to vote for the names of Pluto’s two unnamed moons and let-me-say-right-now, I am a huge supporter of one of them being named Persephone. (Well it should technically be Prosperpina/Prosperpine if you’re going for the Roman names but I digress.) The whole thing’s made me think a bunch about my own Hades and Persephone analogues; Dhio being an irritable creepy god of what people (mistakenly) assume is death and Kaia being an even-temepered goddess of the hearth and domesticated animals.
Anyway what I’m getting at is that, despite its being in first place, Vulcan really isn’t an appropriate name for a frozen moon of a dwarf planet.
