The Forty-sixth Beast.
The beast’s tusks have grown, as have its sensory organs, which have grown more pliable. It now walks on its hands and knees as well as its feet. I imagine it is quite small.
Sometimes when I don’t have a biological niche to push the beast towards, I think of ways to make it as weird and improbable as possible. I imagine that’s how nature works half the time anyway.
